So there you have it. Today, those numskulls in the Dail have passed the blasphemy amendments to the defamation bill without debate. Funny how there was no public consultation on this. Where did this come from? Is there more to this?

At first look it seems that this is yet an another example of an out of touch, incompetent government. Who owns the hands up their arses?

See what people are saying about blasphemy on Twitter search here.

Get the latest on blasphemy.ie

So let me start the ball rolling. As I am a God msyself I shall be my own first victim. “Fuck Nano Manannan and the Whore of Babylon he rode in on”

Now where did I put my Holy Hand-grenade?

Here’s a selection of astronomical images which have caught my eye for various reasons in the past few months. Click on a pic to get the full effect.

We normally only see Saturn from the “sun-side”, but the Cassini probe recently took this sublime image from the far side of Saturn looking back towards the sun. And with Saturn eclipsing the sun we see the rings in a way we never have before. Firstly you’ll notice how translucent the rings are when we see them through direct light and not the reflected light that usually illuminates them. Secondly you’ll see the outer rings which are normally not visible, but this view of the “F-rings” lets you see exactly the sheer scale involved.
And that little dot on the left between the regular rings and the F-ring? That’s us on earth that is!!!

This is obviously a composite image of the earth at night. What struck me about this pic is that it speaks volumes about the global distribution of wealth versus the distribution of human population.

Our nearest galactic neighbour – the Andromeda Galaxy. I just love the resolution and detail of this photo from Oct 2002. The apparent tranquility of this scene belies the fact that a super-massive black hole resides at the center of this and most other galaxies, including our own Milky Way. At once the black hole both supports the galaxy with a gravitational center and violently consumes it, releasing vast quantities of energy in the x-ray and Gamma-ray spectrum.

An interesting article over at New York Times merits mention. Namely, the article explains the scientific discoveries leading to the drafting of the neanderthal genome.

Also clarified in the article are the unresolved hot topics in genomics. For example, attention is drawn to the debate as to whether Neanderthels became extinct or were interbred with modern humans. Definitive inference required.

Also compelling is the potential to reconstruct a Neanderthel, as in a clone derived from a complete Neanderthel genome.

Sooooo here’s the article

Not to shy away from the ethical debate to inevitably follow from the very existence of the Neanderthal genome, I propose that the first Neanderthel clone be banned from watching Planet of the Apes. We do not want to be giving the Neanderthal a schema for world domination. After all the Neanderthal brain is bigger than modern human brain (yes google if in doubt), and there exists a modest correlation between brain size and intelligence, with intelligence here being psychometrically defined intelligence (google the correlation if in doubt).

It’s spooky to think that with the supposed thousands of years modern humans have been on earth that photgraphic evidence only stretches as far back as grandparents/greatgrandparents, and that as of from the next few years it will be possible to reconstruct that which was either made extinct by or subsumed by modern humans i.e., the Neanderthal.

1 Trillion = 1,000,000,000,000

Well obviously a trillion is a one with twelve zeros after it. But how much is it in understandable terms? Few of us can grasp the meaning of a trillion – most of us don’t realise exactly how huge it really is.

It is obviously also a million million, or a thousand billion if you want to put it like that.

The Human species, homo sapiens sapiens, has been around for a long time – the best estimates are somewhere between 100,000 and 250,000 years. So let’s take the outside estimate of 250,000 years. You would have to spend about $4,000,000 a year, (every year!) for a quarter of a million years in order to reach a trillion dollars! That’s a little under $11,000 a day.

Recorded human history extends from the present roughly to the end of the last Ice Age – about 10,000 years. That would require a spending spree in which you had to spend $100 million a year – or $275,000 a day – to reach the magic trillion!

Jesus of Nazareth was allegedly born 2000 years ago. If he had lived for 2000 years and had a trillion dollars to spend he would have to clock about$500 million (half a billion!!!) every year – or $1.37 million a day!!!!!!!

And I bet he would’ve spent it all on crap – like world peace and such.

Me? Well, it would have to be crazy liquor and cheeseburger partys all the way!

The Seventh Research Framework Programme (FP7) is a European Union sponsored initiative aimed at financing research relevant to improving the future of humanity. Prior to submitting a proposal to FP7 a researcher is required to read several guides contained within an information package. Browsing through the guides I happened upon the programme’s ethical standpoint in relation to developing information communication technologies (ICT) that are implanted in the individual, as follows;

“To the extent that an individual, via an ICT implant or wearable computing device, becomes part of an ICT network, the operation of this network will need to respect privacy and data protection requirements

ICT implants to enhance human capabilities should only be developed: to bring individuals into the “normal” range for the population, if they so wish and give their informed consent; or to improve health prospects such as enhancing the immune system. Their use should be based on need, rather than economic resources or social position.

ICT implants or wearable computing devices must not: allow individuals to be located on a permanent and/or occasional basis, without the individual’s prior knowledge and consent; allow information to be
changed remotely without the individual’s prior knowledge and consent; be used to support any kind of discrimination; be used to manipulate mental functions or change personal identity, memory, self perception, perception of others; be used to enhance capabilities in order to dominate others, or enable remote control over the will of other people.

ICT implants should not be developed to influence future generations, either biologically or culturally.”

The categorical imperatives above are interesting examples of the highest moral ground in the merging of man and machine. Likewise the imperatives, or ethical prescriptions, show how what ought to be done is very different from what can be theoretically done, or what can be done in practice.

The nanotechnology ethical guidelines then explain;

“ICT-bio/nano-electronics has a strong potential for mis-use”

It’s been little more than 150 years since the scientifc method was applied to explaining the mind, little more than 60 years since the modern computer has been invented, little more than 15 years since biological imaging techniques have been applied to understanding the mind, and around twenty years since grid computing was invented, and look at the ethical prescriptions already in place to protect us from potentialities!!!
